Antique Victorian oval locket featuring beautiful ivy decoration set in sterling silver. In the Victorian era the Ivy leaf symbolised love, affection, fidelity, friendship and affection. The locket opens to review two areas where pictures can be placed.
On the back of the pendant is has two visible hallmarks, an anchor and lion. These marks indicate the piece was hallmarked in Birmingham, England and it is made from sterling silver.
HISTORY
The locket has a long rich history, during the earlier centuries, they were used to carry good luck charms, mementoes, hair, powder and even poison. The locket secured its romantic status during the Victorian era, it became the most mysterious and alluring pieces of jewellery. Only the wearer knows what secrets lie within the locket. It was to be the ultimate love token. Pictures held in lockets were originally miniature portraits, these were gradually replaced with photographs.
